What Manacled is about

Manacled is set in a world where the Order of the Phoenix lost the war. Harry Potter is dead, Voldemort rules wizarding Britain, and Muggle-borns are enslaved. Hermione Granger has spent more than a year alone in a dark, silent cell, and large parts of the war are missing from her memory. They have been sealed away so thoroughly that no one can reach them, Hermione included.

Voldemort is sure those memories hide an Order secret. To shake it loose, he sends her into his new repopulation program as a surrogate. She is locked into manacles that block her magic and placed in the house of the High Reeve, his masked executioner and second in command. The High Reeve is Draco Malfoy, and his job is to search her mind until it gives up what it is hiding.

The story moves in three parts. The first follows Hermione through her captivity in the present. The second goes back through the war years in a long run of flashbacks. The third returns to the present once the truth is out. SenLinYu has said the idea grew out of the pilot of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Manacled is tagged as an eventual romance with a happy ending, but its author calls it a dystopian horror story and a tragedy, and has said it is not meant to be an aspirational romance. It is long, dark and built like a mystery: you learn what happened in the war only as fast as Hermione does.

The main characters

Hermione Granger
The Order’s healer during the war, trained abroad and once Snape’s apprentice. In the present she is a prisoner, and the memories everyone wants are locked away from her too.
Draco Malfoy
The High Reeve: Voldemort’s masked executioner and second in command, married to Astoria. Hermione is placed in his house so he can search her mind.
Voldemort
The winner of the war. He rules wizarding Britain and created the repopulation program.
Astoria Malfoy
Draco’s wife, openly hostile to the surrogate living in her house.
Lucius Malfoy
Draco’s unstable father, whose part in the story grows in its final third.
Harry, Ron and Ginny
Seen mostly in the flashbacks, as the war strains Hermione’s friendships with them.
Umbridge, Stroud and Snape
Umbridge runs Voldemort’s prisons, Healer Stroud oversees the surrogacy, and Snape was Hermione’s mentor in the war years.

Themes

Survival and trauma

SenLinYu describes the story as being about trauma and survival, legacy, and the way love can drive a person to extreme darkness. Much of it is about what someone will do to stay alive, and to keep someone else alive.

What a war costs

The book keeps asking what a side is willing to do to win and who pays for it. One critic, reviewing the published version, said it has no heroes.

The women history forgets

The author has spoken about the unseen, unspoken sacrifice of women in war, the work that never makes it into the history books. They name Svetlana Alexievich’s The Unwomanly Face of War as a key text for the novel version.

Memory

Hermione’s sealed memories drive the mystery. Every scene in the present is shaped by something she cannot remember, and the long flashback section is the payoff.

Control over bodies

The repopulation program makes forced pregnancy part of how the regime runs. The published novel reworks the program as eugenics.

Manacled and Alchemised

In February 2024 SenLinYu announced that Manacled had been reworked into an original novel, Alchemised, and that the fic would leave AO3. The reason they gave was a growing problem with illegal sales of Manacled: people were selling bound copies and merchandise without permission. Manacled was removed from AO3 on January 1, 2025.

Alchemised came out on September 23, 2025 from Del Rey in the US and Michael Joseph in the UK. It keeps the shape of Manacled (a captive healer, a High Reeve, a present, a long past and a present again) but moves it to Paladia, a gaslamp city where magic is alchemy. Hermione becomes Helena Marino and Draco becomes Kaine Ferron. It went to number one on the New York Times combined print and e-book fiction list, and Legendary bought the film rights.

SenLinYu has asked readers to stop telling people that it is necessary to read Manacled before Alchemised. If you are starting now, Alchemised is the version you can buy, borrow and read legally.
