Alchemised Character Names: Manacled Equivalents Explained

Updated 7 minute readBy the Exclusive Design Lab team

This guide matches Alchemised character names to their Manacled originals, and it keeps late-story spoilers to one marked section at the end. Three matches are confirmed in press coverage: Hermione Granger became Helena Marino, Draco Malfoy became Kaine Ferron, and Harry Potter became Luc Holdfast. Most of the others are readers’ readings of who fills the same role, and we label each one so you know which is which.

Manacled is Harry Potter fan fiction, and the characters it borrows belong to J.K. Rowling. Alchemised swaps all of them for an original cast in an original world, so a one-to-one list only goes so far. Use the tables as a bridge, not a rulebook.

Alchemised Character Names: How We Label Each Match

Every row in the tables below carries one of these labels:

  • Confirmed: stated by SenLinYu or in press coverage of the book.
  • Fan reading: a match made in fan guides to the novel. Widely shared, but not confirmed by the author.
  • Parallel role: our own reading. The character or idea does the same job in the story, but nobody has confirmed the link.
  • Same name: the character appears under the same name in both versions.

We have left out matches we could not support. Ron Weasley and Severus Snape, for example, have no counterpart we are confident naming, so they are not in the tables.

The Main Cast: Manacled to Alchemised

In Manacled In Alchemised Who they are in Alchemised Match
Hermione Granger Helena Marino A healer, born in Etras Confirmed
Draco Malfoy Kaine Ferron The High Reeve, heir to the Iron Guild Confirmed
Harry Potter Luc (Lucien) Holdfast The Principate, Helena’s best friend Confirmed
Voldemort Morrough The High Necromancer, who rules Paladia through the Guild Assembly Fan reading
Dumbledore Principate Apollo Holdfast Luc’s father, whose murder started the war Fan reading
Lucius Malfoy Atreus Ferron Kaine’s father, the Iron Guildmaster Fan reading
Narcissa Malfoy Enid Ferron Kaine’s mother, who died in 1785 Fan reading
Astoria Greengrass Aurelia Ferron (née Ingram) Kaine’s wife in an arranged marriage Fan reading
Dolores Umbridge, the prison warden Warden Mandl Runs the warehouse where Helena is held in stasis Fan reading
Healer Stroud Dr. Irmgard Stroud Regime scientist overseeing Helena and the Repopulation Programme Same name
Graham Montague Erik Lancaster A member of the Nickel Guild Parallel role
Ginny Weasley Lila Bayard A paladin and combat alchemist, twin sister of Soren Bayard Fan reading, with an author caveat

A few notes on the less obvious rows. Healer Stroud keeps the same surname in both versions, which makes that match plain. In the novel, Erik Lancaster is Aurelia’s lover, and Graham Montague reportedly plays a similar part opposite Astoria in the fic, which is why we read them as a pair. Our Manacled characters guide covers the original cast in more depth.

Who Is Helena Marino?

Helena Marino is the heroine of Alchemised and the novel’s version of Hermione Granger. She was born in Etras and left the city to study healing, much as Hermione trained as a healer abroad. When the story opens she wakes after 14 months in a stasis tank, with a gap in her memory that the regime wants opened.

SenLinYu has pointed to a pun in the name, with “Hel” playing on both light and death. They have also named two books behind the character: Fanny Price in Mansfield Park was a model for Helena, and they have said Helena might not have been a healer without Mary Doria Russell’s The Sparrow.

Who Is Kaine Ferron?

Kaine Ferron is the High Reeve, the novel’s version of Draco Malfoy. He is heir to the Iron Guild and a general of the Undying, the regime’s immortal elite. As a 16-year-old he killed Principate Apollo Holdfast, the killing that started the war. He is married to Aurelia, and Helena is sent to him.

Who Is Luc Holdfast?

Luc Holdfast, full name Lucien, takes Harry Potter’s place. He is the Principate, Helena’s best friend and the prophesied leader of the Resistance. SenLinYu has named the anime Frieren as an influence on him.

Lila Bayard and the Author’s Caveat

Fans match Lila Bayard to Ginny Weasley, and the parallel holds in places. SenLinYu, though, says Lila was not a straight port. They built her fresh as Helena’s foil and describe the two women as “inverted mirrors”. The author also says Lila was inspired by Athena. So treat this row as a starting point and read Lila on her own terms.

Alchemised Harry Potter Equivalents: Groups, Places and Magic

The world changed even more than the cast. Here is how the groups, places and concepts line up.

In Manacled In Alchemised Notes Match
The Order of the Phoenix The Order of the Eternal Flame, also called the Resistance The publisher’s own copy uses the name Fan reading
Death Eaters The Undying Morrough’s immortal elite, with the Aspirants ranked below them Fan reading
Inferi Necrothralls, also “thralls” or “greys” Reanimated corpses Parallel role
Wizarding Britain Paladia A vertical city-state, “New Paladia” after the war Confirmed
Hogwarts The Alchemy Institute Often just “the Institute” Fan reading
Malfoy Manor Spirefell The Ferrons’ iron-built estate Fan reading
Training as a healer abroad Etras Helena’s birth country Fan reading
Magic Alchemy, with power called resonance Disciplines include vivimancy, necromancy, animancy and pyromancy Confirmed
The Dark Arts Necromancy Confirmed
Legilimency sessions Transference Kaine enters Helena’s mind Parallel role
The repopulation program The Repopulation Programme Rebuilt around eugenics Confirmed

SenLinYu describes the setting as “gaslamp fantasy”, which is the quickest way to picture Paladia: a vertical city run through its guilds, with alchemy where wizarding magic used to be. For how those changes reshape the plot, see our Manacled vs Alchemised comparison.

Spoiler warning: the rest of this page reveals major twists from both versions, including who survives and how they end. Stop here if you have not finished both.

What the Spoiler Matches Reveal

Kaine’s secret is Draco’s secret. Both High Reeves spy for the other side. Draco works for the Order to avenge Narcissa, and Kaine works for the Resistance to avenge his mother, Enid. Helena is publicly a vivimancer and secretly an animancer, which is how she hides what she knows.

Morrough has another name. He is revealed as Cetus, an ancient alchemist tied to Orion, the founder of the Holdfast line.

Atreus is not quite Atreus. By the present day, Kaine’s father is a lich living in Jan Crowther’s body. He also kills Aurelia, the death that Lucius deals Astoria in Manacled.

Lila takes Ginny’s final act. Ginny kills Voldemort in the fic; Lila kills Morrough in the novel, using Helena’s obsidian bomb. Lila is also the mother of Luc’s son Pol, as Ginny is the mother of Harry’s son James.

The daughters. SenLinYu confirmed the name Aurore for Draco and Hermione’s daughter. In the novel, the daughter is Enid Rose Ferron, who shares her first name with Kaine’s mother.

Stroud does not make it. In the novel, Kaine later kills Stroud, along with others from their past, to bury evidence. Erik Lancaster also dies at Kaine’s hands after attacking Helena.

If you are reading Alchemised after Manacled, keep the main cast table open for the first few chapters, then try to stop checking it: the novel’s Paladia is easier to enjoy once you read its people as themselves.
