How long is Manacled? Its final count is 370,515 words across 77 chapters, which Business Insider described as “nearly double the length of Deathly Hallows”. At a steady 250 words per minute, that works out to about 24.7 hours of reading. Its published rework, Alchemised, runs 1,040 pages in the US and UK hardcovers and 36 hours 15 minutes as an audiobook.

Below are the numbers, how the chapters are grouped, a reading-time table at three speeds with the arithmetic shown, and a sample plan. One thing to know first: Manacled was removed from AO3 on January 1, 2025, and there is no authorized place to read it now. Manacled Word Count and Chapter Count

Manacled’s final word count on AO3 was 370,515. Its 77 chapters are named in four runs, which follow the three-part plan SenLinYu had for the story: the present, then the past, then the present again.

So the long middle section of flashbacks holds almost half the chapters (38 of 77), and the final present-day run plus the epilogues is the shortest stretch at 14.

How many words is a chapter? On average, 370,515 ÷ 77 = about 4,812 words. That is a calculated average, not a measured chapter length, so expect individual chapters to run shorter or longer.

How Long Does It Take to Read Manacled?

Reading time depends on your speed. The table uses three paces and the full 370,515 words. All figures are our estimates, rounded, and they count only time spent reading.

Alchemised is the official, reworked version, and it is a big book in every edition. Its word count has not been published, so you cannot compare it word for word with Manacled. Page counts also vary with the edition, as the table shows.

The UK hardback weighs 1,295 g, about 2.9 pounds, so if you read in bed or on a commute, the ebook or the audiobook may be easier to live with.

How Long Is the Alchemised Audiobook at Faster Speeds?

At normal speed the audiobook runs 36 hours 15 minutes, or 2,175 minutes. If you listen faster, divide 2,175 minutes by the playback speed. These are our estimates:

• 1.25x: 2,175 ÷ 1.25 = 1,740 minutes, or 29 hours exactly
• 1.5x: 2,175 ÷ 1.5 = 1,450 minutes, or 24 hours 10 minutes
• 2x: 2,175 ÷ 2 = 1,087.5 minutes, or about 18 hours 8 minutes

A part-by-part plan gives you clear finish lines and natural places to pause. Because the flashback section has 38 chapters, it gets two weeks, which makes this a four-week plan for Manacled.

• Six weeks: 1,040 ÷ 42 = about 25 pages a day
• Eight weeks: 1,040 ÷ 56 = about 19 pages a day

The two-week sprint means close to two hours of reading a day, which is a lot for a story this heavy. If you are unsure, start on the four-week plan and slow down when you need to. It is easier to stretch a plan than to catch up on one.

• Note where each part starts. Chapter 26 begins the flashbacks and chapter 64 returns to the present day, so you always know which timeline you are in.
