Manacled Summary: Full Plot of All Three Parts (Spoilers)

Updated 7 minute readBy the Exclusive Design Lab team

This Manacled summary starts with a spoiler-free premise, then gives the full plot with spoilers in a section that is clearly marked before it begins. In short, Manacled is Harry Potter fan fiction by SenLinYu, set in a world where Voldemort won the war. Hermione Granger, a captured Order healer with a secret sealed inside her own mind, is sent as an enslaved surrogate to Voldemort’s High Reeve until someone can get that secret out of her.

The fic was posted on Archive of Our Own (AO3) between 2018 and 2019, and SenLinYu later reworked it into the novel Alchemised. For the background on both versions, see our Manacled book page. This page sticks to the plot.

A content note before you read on: Manacled is rated Explicit, and rape, forced pregnancy, torture, self-harm and graphic violence are central to the story. This summary names them without detail. Our Manacled trigger warnings guide covers each one.

What Is Manacled About? A Spoiler-Free Premise

Harry Potter is dead and Voldemort rules wizarding Britain. The Order of the Phoenix has lost, and the new regime enslaves Muggle-borns. Because pureblood birthrates have fallen to a critical low, Voldemort’s government runs a repopulation program: marriages are mandated, and Muggle-born and half-blood prisoners are made surrogates for couples who cannot have children.

Hermione opens the story in a dark, soundless solitary cell, and Dolores Umbridge, who now runs Voldemort’s prisons, drags her out. A healer finds that part of Hermione’s memory has been sealed off by magic. Legilimency can’t reach it, and neither can Hermione. Voldemort is convinced she is hiding an Order secret, and that belief is the only reason she is still alive.

A magical pregnancy is expected to loosen those memories. A father with a similar magical signature could still search her mind during the pregnancy, so the regime needs a trusted, skilled Legilimens. That man is the High Reeve, Voldemort’s masked executioner and second-in-command: Draco Malfoy, now married to Astoria. Hermione is fitted with manacles that block all her magic, stop her touching weapons or harming herself or her master, and make her trackable.

From there the present-day story works as a slow mystery. What is Hermione hiding, and why does it matter so much? The fic’s own tags point the way: Mystery, Espionage, Memory Loss and Flashbacks.

Full Manacled Plot Summary (Spoilers)

Spoiler warning: from this point on, the page gives away every twist and the ending. If you want to read the story fresh, stop here.

Backstory: Before Chapter 1

Manacled follows canon through the end of Order of the Phoenix, then goes its own way. The war drags on for years. Hermione trains abroad as a healer and becomes the Order’s healer and potions worker; SenLinYu has said she was also Snape’s apprentice. The Order eventually loses, and Harry and Ron die in the final battle at Hogwarts. Much of this is shown later, in the flashbacks.

Part One: Chapters 1–25 (Present Day)

Umbridge pulls Hermione out of solitary, and the healer’s examination reveals the sealed memories. Snape is reportedly asked first to take her as a surrogate and declines, and she is sent to the High Reeve at Malfoy Manor instead.

Life at the Manor is grim. Astoria is openly hostile to her, and Draco and Voldemort search her mind over and over with Legilimency. On Voldemort’s orders, Draco rapes Hermione to make her pregnant, and he is cold and detached. SenLinYu has said that Draco secretly used contraception until Healer Stroud, who oversees the surrogacy, threatened to transfer Hermione to his father, Lucius.

The household grows more dangerous. At an equinox party, Hermione is reportedly assaulted by Graham Montague, a Death Eater having an affair with Astoria. Astoria herself tries to gouge out Hermione’s eye with her wand. Hermione becomes pregnant, and around Chapter 25 the walls in her mind begin to crumble.

Part Two: Flashbacks 1–38 (Chapters 26–63, the War Years)

The story now goes back to the war. Hermione argues that the Order should use the Dark Arts, and she grows estranged from Harry and Ron, who refuse.

Order leaders then tell her that Draco Malfoy has offered to spy for them. His price is a pardon, and Hermione herself, both during the war and after it. She becomes his secret contact. They meet in secret, and he trains her to fight.

His real motive is revenge for his mother. Voldemort tortured Narcissa, and Draco took the Dark Mark to protect her. After her death he waited before turning, so he would not draw suspicion. SenLinYu has said Narcissa died at Lestrange Manor, along with Bellatrix, Crabbe and Goyle.

Draco’s intelligence lets the Order raid a prison, and Voldemort punishes him by carving dark runes into his back. While healing him, Hermione secretly places an artifact called the Heart of Isis in the runes without telling him; its purpose is explained in Chapter 47. Slowly, amid mutual mistrust and Draco’s growing possessiveness, the two fall in love.

Hermione and Draco track Horcruxes, and Harry turns out to be one. At the final battle at Hogwarts, Voldemort kills Harry, which weakens Voldemort without killing him, and Ron dies too. Harry had made Hermione promise to protect Ginny and his unborn child. Draco retrieves Ginny from a lab so that Hermione will agree to leave Europe.

Hermione then blows up the lab to destroy the records of Draco, and she is captured. Before the manacles go on, she uses Occlumency to bury every memory of Draco to protect his cover, which locks those memories away from her too. That is the secret Voldemort has been trying to crack since Chapter 1: Draco is the spy.

Part Three: Chapters 64–74 (Present Day)

Hermione’s memories return. Chapter 64 reveals that Ginny and her son James are alive, hidden by Draco, and that Hermione is James’s godmother. She now understands that Draco’s cruelty was cover, kept up because Voldemort was constantly searching her mind. Draco plans to get her out, expecting to die himself.

Lucius, who is unstable, is ordered to crack Hermione’s mind. He kidnaps her, uses Legilimency, and learns that Draco is a spy and that Voldemort tortured Narcissa. Lucius then kills Astoria. SenLinYu has explained that Draco engineered this by baiting his father about Astoria erasing Narcissa’s touch from the Manor.

In the escape, Hermione’s manacles come off and she amputates Draco’s arm, the one that bears the Dark Mark. Lucius reportedly stages a murder-suicide by fire at the Manor, so that he, Draco and Hermione are all presumed dead. Draco and Hermione flee through Denmark to an unplottable island in Japan, where Ginny and James are hiding.

The Epilogues: Chapters 75–77

In hiding in Japan, Hermione gives birth to their daughter, Aurore. About four years after the escape, Ginny kills Voldemort, and SenLinYu has said she could only do it because Draco had trained her. War trials follow. SenLinYu has said purebloods who kept surrogates faced legal penalties depending on the surrogates’ testimony.

Draco and Hermione stay hidden and presumed dead. The final chapter jumps forward to a history book. Draco gets a chapter of his own. Hermione gets one index entry: a photo caption that records her as an inactive member of the Order of the Phoenix who never fought. A grown Aurore reads it, and those are the story’s last lines. We unpack that choice, and the fourth epilogue SenLinYu decided not to post, in Manacled ending explained.

Where Alchemised Fits

SenLinYu reworked Manacled into the novel Alchemised, published on September 23, 2025 by Del Rey in the US and Michael Joseph in the UK. It keeps the same three-part shape (present, long flashback, present) and the same core arc, but replaces magic with alchemy and gives the characters new names. Several plot mechanics change too, including how Helena, the Hermione figure, loses her memories and how the breeding program works. Our Manacled vs Alchemised comparison sets the two side by side.

A practical tip if you are about to start Alchemised and want the twist intact: read only the premise above, then keep the spoiler-light section of our Manacled characters guide open to track who is who.

Frequently asked questions

Is Manacled a romance?

Only partly. It is tagged as a slow build with an eventual romance, but SenLinYu calls it a 'dystopian horror story' and a 'tragedy'. They have also pushed back on the romantasy label while still calling the story a love story.

Do I need to read Manacled before Alchemised?

No. SenLinYu has said so directly: 'Stop telling people that it's necessary to read Manacled before reading Alchemised.' The novel is a standalone.

What inspired Manacled?

The pilot of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. SenLinYu has said the seed of the story was one question: 'What if [Fred Waterford] was a spy?'
