Manacled vs Alchemised: 12 Key Differences Explained

Updated 11 minute readBy the Exclusive Design Lab team

Alchemised is the novel SenLinYu rebuilt from Manacled, their Harry Potter fan fiction. The story’s shape survived: both follow a captured healer whose locked-away memories hold something the regime wants, and the High Reeve she is sent to. What changed is everything that belonged to Harry Potter (the names, the magic and the setting), along with the breeding program, the politics of the world and several major turns in the plot.

This Manacled vs Alchemised comparison starts with a side-by-side table, then walks through the 12 biggest differences and which version to read. Plot spoilers stay in one clearly marked section at the end.

What Carried Over From Manacled

The bones of the story survived the rewrite. If you read Manacled, these parts of Alchemised will feel familiar:

  • The structure. Both open in the present, drop into a long run of flashbacks to the war years, then return to the present.
  • The premise. A healer on the losing side of a war is imprisoned, her memories hold a secret, and she is handed to the regime’s High Reeve, a title that survives unchanged.
  • The core arc. The central relationship follows the same path from start to finish, even where individual events change.
  • The house. The present-day story keeps the heroine inside the High Reeve’s family estate. SenLinYu has said they modeled the house as a character on The Haunting of Hill House.
  • Stroud. The regime’s medical overseer keeps the same surname in both versions.
  • The art. Manacled was “Illustrated by Avendell” on AO3, and every English hardcover of Alchemised includes one black-and-white Avendell illustration.
  • The tone. SenLinYu has called Manacled a “dystopian horror story” and a “tragedy”, and has said the story is not meant as “aspirational” romance. They describe it as being about “trauma and survival, legacy, and the way that love can drive one to extreme darkness.”

Alchemised vs Manacled: 12 Key Differences

These are the Alchemised and Manacled differences you notice from the opening chapters on, without giving away the plot. The twists that changed are in the spoiler section further down.

1. An original novel, not fan fiction

Manacled borrowed J.K. Rowling’s characters and world, and SenLinYu posted it free on AO3, chapter by chapter, from April 2018 to August 2019. Alchemised is SenLinYu’s own world, published by major imprints in the US, the UK and Canada. Nearly every other change follows from this one: nothing that belongs to Harry Potter could stay.

2. Paladia replaces wizarding Britain

Manacled is set in wizarding Britain after Voldemort wins. Alchemised moves the story to Paladia, a vertical city-state, in a period the author calls “gaslamp fantasy”. Every Harry Potter place is gone, and the novel builds its own world, institutions and history from the ground up.

3. Alchemy replaces wizarding magic

Wands and spells give way to alchemy. Power is called resonance, and the disciplines include vivimancy, necromancy, animancy and pyromancy, with necromancy taking the place of the Dark Arts. SenLinYu has named Fullmetal Alchemist, Fate/Zero, Castlevania and Frieren among their influences, and Lawrence Principe’s The Secrets of Alchemy among the books behind the system.

4. Every character has a new name

Hermione Granger becomes Helena Marino, Draco Malfoy becomes Kaine Ferron, Harry Potter becomes Luc Holdfast and Voldemort becomes Morrough, the High Necromancer. The Order of the Phoenix becomes the Order of the Eternal Flame. Two things cross over unchanged: the High Reeve’s title and Stroud’s surname. Our guide to Alchemised character names maps the rest of the cast, the groups and the places, and marks which matches are confirmed and which are readers’ readings.

5. A different first scene

Manacled opens with Umbridge, now running Voldemort’s prisons, pulling Hermione from solitary confinement. Alchemised opens with Helena waking after 14 months in a stasis tank in a warehouse run by Warden Mandl. Both scenes start the same way: a prisoner brought out of long confinement and into the regime’s hands.

6. Eugenics instead of surrogacy

In Manacled, pureblood birthrates have collapsed, marriages are mandated, and Muggle-born and half-blood captives are made surrogates for barren couples. SenLinYu first cut the program from the novel, then rebuilt it as eugenics: the regime’s immortal elite, the Undying, breed captive women for resonances they can pass on. It is no longer about giving children to childless couples. It is about what the regime wants to breed.

7. Religion becomes part of the war

The novel gives its war a religious dimension. Critics have pointed to religion and orthodoxy set against pragmatism, with the Order condemning necromancy and vivimancy. SenLinYu’s own content warnings for Alchemised include religious abuse, which none of Manacled’s AO3 tags mention.

8. Guilds and class replace blood status

Manacled runs on Harry Potter’s hierarchy of purebloods, half-bloods and Muggle-borns. Alchemised builds its own social order. Critics have discussed patriarchy and class in its alchemical society, and the High Reeve, Kaine Ferron, is heir to the Iron Guild rather than to an old pureblood family.

9. Lila Bayard is not simply Ginny

Fans often read Lila Bayard, a paladin and combat alchemist, as the novel’s Ginny Weasley. SenLinYu says that is too simple: Lila was built fresh as Helena’s foil, the two women written as “inverted mirrors”, and the author has said Lila was inspired by Athena. Read her on her own terms rather than as a copy.

10. A book’s structure in place of AO3 chapters

Manacled’s 77 chapters were labeled for the archive: “Chapter 1” to “Chapter 25” in the present, “Flashback 1” to “Flashback 38” for the war years, then “Chapter 64” to “Chapter 74” and three epilogues. Alchemised keeps the three movements, and one chapter-by-chapter summary describes it as a prologue, 77 chapters and an epilogue, divided into three parts. The novel runs 1,040 pages, while its word count has not been published. Our guide to how long Manacled is compares the two lengths and has reading-time estimates.

11. A war story first

On AO3, Manacled carried tags such as “Eventual Romance” and “Angst with a Happy Ending” next to its warnings. Reviewers have read the novel as a war story first: Slate called it a “straight-up war story, deeply bloody, sad, and miserable” compared with other books that began as Draco and Hermione fan fiction. It is not gentler, either. The author’s list for Alchemised adds human experimentation, medical torture, cannibalism and allusions to necrophilia, none of which appear in Manacled’s tags. Our Manacled trigger warnings guide sets out both lists.

12. How you can read it

Manacled was free to read online for more than six years, then came off AO3 on January 1, 2025. Alchemised is sold in hardcover, ebook and audio (read by Saskia Maarleveld), the publisher says it is published in twenty languages, and a Deluxe Three-Volume Slipcase Edition followed on October 13, 2026. Legendary Entertainment also owns the film rights.

Why Manacled Became Alchemised

SenLinYu began redrafting Manacled around Christmas 2022 and announced the novel on February 5, 2024. In the same announcement they said the fic would stay up through 2024, “at which point it will, if you’ll pardon the pun, alchemise for 2025 and be removed from AO3.”

The reason they gave for taking it down was “a growing issue with illegal sales of Manacled, putting both me and the incredible community that shares fanfiction freely in legal jeopardy.” Unauthorized print bindings, merch and ebook listings had been selling, some bindings for hundreds of dollars.

The rewrite went further than swapping names. SenLinYu has described cutting the breeding program and then rebuilding it around eugenics, and building Lila as a new character. They also named Svetlana Alexievich’s The Unwomanly Face of War as a key research text, for the war and for the women history leaves out.

Should I Read Manacled or Alchemised?

For most readers the choice is already made. Manacled came off AO3 on January 1, 2025, and there is no authorized way to read it now; our guide on where to read Manacled explains why and lists the official Alchemised editions. SenLinYu has also been blunt about reading order: “Stop telling people that it’s necessary to read Manacled before reading Alchemised.”

Here is how we would match readers to versions:

  • You have never read either. Read Alchemised. It stands on its own, and it is the only version you can get legally.
  • You read Manacled years ago. Alchemised is worth it if you want to see the story rebuilt. Expect familiar beats early and bigger departures as the plot goes on.
  • You saved a copy of Manacled before it came down. In 2024 the author said readers “are welcome to keep” copies they had saved. Just do not buy one: every copy offered for sale is unauthorized.
  • You only want the Harry Potter characters. Only Manacled has them, and you cannot get it legally now. Alchemised is the closest thing.
  • You prefer audio. Go with the Alchemised audiobook, read by Saskia Maarleveld, at 36 hours 15 minutes.
  • You want something gentle. Neither. Both are adult books with sexual violence, abuse and self-harm on the page.
  • You have finished Alchemised and want more. SenLinYu returned to its world in a short story, “Underbelly”, published in Grimdark Magazine in October 2026.

To be honest about the novel’s weak spots: reviewers praised the worldbuilding, but some found the secondary characters thin, the scenes between Helena and Kaine repetitive, and the final third quick to move past the fallout.

Spoilers: Plot Differences Between Manacled and Alchemised

Spoiler warning: everything below gives away major twists and the endings of both versions. Stop here if you have not finished either one.

Plot point Manacled Alchemised
The lost memories Hermione used Occlumency to bury every memory of Draco before the manacles went on, to protect his cover Helena erased her own memories with animancy
The High Reeve’s secret Draco spies for the Order to avenge his mother, Narcissa Kaine spies for the Resistance to avenge his mother, Enid
Why the regime breeds captives Surrogacy for barren couples Eugenics, partly to grow future host bodies for necromancers’ souls; the Order had sterilized Helena as the price of being a healer, and Stroud reverses it without her consent
How the war was lost Voldemort kills Harry, a Horcrux, in the final battle at Hogwarts; Ron dies Morrough possesses Luc for months to breach the Order’s stronghold, and Luc takes his own life
The villain Voldemort Morrough, revealed as Cetus, an ancient alchemist tied to the Holdfast founder Orion
The wife’s death Lucius kills Astoria, in a death Draco engineered Atreus murders Aurelia
The escape The manacles come off and Hermione amputates Draco’s Mark-bearing arm; they flee via Denmark to an unplottable island in Japan Spirefell burns and they escape on Kaine’s chimaera, Amaris; there is no amputation, and Kaine ends up mortal, with silver-white hair
Who is waiting Ginny and her son James, hidden by Draco They sail with Lila and her son Pol to an island off Etras
The daughter Aurore Enid Rose
The villain’s death Ginny kills Voldemort about four years after the escape Lila kills Morrough about 18 months later with Helena’s obsidian bomb
Afterward Draco and Hermione stay hidden, presumed dead Kaine quietly kills people from their past, Stroud included, to bury the evidence
The final pages A history book gives Draco a chapter and Hermione a photo caption that dismisses her as a non-combatant In 1808, Enid Rose studies vivimancy at the rebuilt Institute alongside Pol, and a history book calls Kaine a born monster and dismisses Helena in nearly the same caption

What the changes add up to

The price of escape changes. In Manacled it is Draco’s arm. In Alchemised, Kaine ends up mortal, and after the war he keeps killing quietly to bury the evidence of their past. The villain gets a new backstory too: Morrough is revealed as Cetus, an ancient alchemist, where Manacled could lean on Voldemort’s history from the books.

Lila takes Ginny’s final act. Whatever SenLinYu’s intentions for her, she is the one who strikes the last blow against the villain, as Ginny did, and she is the mother of the dead hero’s son.

The ending kept its point. Both versions close on a history that remembers the High Reeve and writes the heroine out as someone who did not fight. SenLinYu cut a planned fourth epilogue from Manacled (an editor’s note implying Aurore wrote the story) because they wanted readers left with the injustice of forgotten war victims. That idea, women’s “unseen, unspoken sacrifice”, is one they name as a theme of the novel too. Our Manacled ending explained guide goes through the original ending in detail, and the Manacled book page collects every guide in this series.

If you know Manacled well and are unsure about the novel, read the free official samples before you commit: the publisher’s sample, plus the prologue and Chapter 1 that SenLinYu posted for free. A few pages of the new world will tell you quickly whether the rebuild works for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alchemised the same as Manacled?

Not quite. It keeps Manacled's premise, three-part structure and central relationship, but every name, the setting and the magic are new, and several major plot turns play out differently.

Is Alchemised a standalone or a series?

In English, Alchemised is a single-volume standalone novel. The Deluxe Three-Volume Slipcase Edition, released on October 13, 2026, divides the same novel into three hardcover volumes, but it is not a sequel series.

Is Alchemised a romance novel?

SenLinYu calls it a love story but rejects the romantasy label ('a bit like playing Whac-A-Mole', in their words).

Is there a movie of Manacled or Alchemised?

Legendary Entertainment bought the film rights to Alchemised in a pre-emptive deal announced on September 10, 2025. SenLinYu said they 'can't wait to see the world of Paladia come to life.'
