The Inspiration: The Handmaid’s Tale

Manacled started with the first episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and both SenLinYu and the press point to it as the direct inspiration. Margaret Atwood’s novel, the book behind that series, imagines a theocratic state that forces fertile women to bear children for its ruling class.

You can see the debt in Manacled’s first chapters. Voldemort’s regime runs a repopulation program in which Muggle-born and half-blood captives become surrogates for pureblood couples who can’t have children, and the surrogates wear red. Umbridge, who now runs Voldemort’s prisons, fills a role that parallels Aunt Lydia’s.

Read it for the political horror of the setup, which is the part Manacled borrowed. Don’t expect anything like the Hermione and Draco story inside it.

Other Dramione-Origin Novels

Manacled is one of several popular fics that their authors reworked into original novels, a route known as “pull to publish”. Critics often group these books with Alchemised, but the shared origin doesn’t mean a shared mood. Slate called Alchemised a “straight-up war story, deeply bloody, sad, and miserable” next to the other Dramione-origin books.

Rose in Chains by Julie Soto

Julie Soto wrote the Dramione fic The Auction as LovesBitca8, and Rose in Chains is its adaptation. Like Manacled, it centers a captive heroine, here bought by an enemy. It is book 1 of a planned trilogy, so you are signing up for more than one volume. Of the published Dramione-origin novels, this is the closest match in premise.

The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley

In fandom, Brigitte Knightley is isthisselfcare, author of the well-loved Dramione fic Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love. Her novel is a lighter, banter-driven book that critics group with Alchemised and Rose in Chains. It makes a good breather after Manacled rather than a substitute for it.

Other Fan Fiction Turned Novels

• The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon. An enemies-to-lovers wartime romantasy that began as Reylo (Star Wars) fan fiction. It shares the war setting and the fic-to-novel route.
• Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James. The landmark fan fiction turned bestseller, and the comparison the press often reaches for. SenLinYu has pushed back on that comparison, so read it for the publishing history, not as a read-alike.

Books SenLinYu Names as Influences

When Alchemised came out, SenLinYu wrote about the books that shaped it. These are the best picks if you want to know where the novel’s ideas came from, and several are classics.

• Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. SenLinYu calls it their most constant influence, for its themes of creation, monstrosity and grief. Shelley’s novel follows a scientist who brings a creature to life.
• The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Their model for the house as a character. If the Malfoy house in Manacled felt like a presence of its own, this is the classic version of that idea.
• Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut. A World War II spy living with the moral cost of deep cover. It suits readers who were drawn to Manacled’s espionage thread and its wartime ethics.
• The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. SenLinYu says Helena, Hermione’s counterpart in Alchemised, might not have been a healer without it.
• The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich. Nonfiction, and SenLinYu’s key research text for the war and for women’s erased labor. It is an oral history of Soviet women in World War II, and it ties to a theme the author names directly: the erasure of women’s “unseen, unspoken sacrifice” in war.

They also name Lawrence Principe’s The Secrets of Alchemy, fitting for a novel in which alchemy replaces magic, along with The Secret Garden, Mansfield Park (Fanny Price was a model for Helena), Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Outside books, SenLinYu has named the anime Fullmetal Alchemist, Fate/Zero, Castlevania and Frieren, the last as an influence on Luc, Harry’s counterpart.

Books Like Alchemised: Dark Fantasy Read-Alikes

Alchemised swaps wands for alchemy and necromancy, and these two turn up on readers’ recommendation lists for it.

• Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Necromancy in a gothic, crumbling setting. It is the read-alike readers recommend most often, and it sits closer to the novel’s necromancy than to the fic’s Harry Potter world.
• The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. It has also been recommended for its path from academy to war, its focus on atrocity and trauma, and violence that is not romanticized.

If you searched for dark romantasy like Manacled, one caution: SenLinYu has resisted the romantasy label for Alchemised (“a bit like playing Whac-A-Mole”, they said), while still calling it a love story. Pick these two for the darkness, and treat any romance as a bonus.

• The Auction by LovesBitca8 (Julie Soto). A dark Voldemort-wins AU in which Hermione is auctioned and bought by Draco. It is the fic behind Rose in Chains and the closest in setup to Manacled.
• Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by isthisselfcare (Brigitte Knightley). A slow-burn post-war Healer/Auror adventure by the author of The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy.
• Isolation by Bex-chan. A classic wartime slow burn in which Draco is hidden in Hermione’s room at Hogwarts.
