Manacled Characters: Who's Who Guide (Spoilers Marked)

Updated 7 minute readBy the Exclusive Design Lab team

This Manacled characters guide is spoiler-light at the top, and every major twist sits in a clearly labeled spoiler section further down. Manacled is Harry Potter fan fiction by SenLinYu, so its cast is J.K. Rowling’s characters reimagined in a world where Voldemort won. The story centers on two of them, Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. Around them is a small cast: Voldemort, Draco’s wife Astoria, his father Lucius, Dolores Umbridge, Severus Snape, Healer Stroud and Graham Montague, with Harry and Ron in the flashbacks.

A content note: Manacled is rated Explicit, and its plot turns on rape, forced pregnancy, torture and self-harm. This guide names them without detail, and our Manacled trigger warnings guide covers each one. For a spoiler-free overview of the story itself, see our Manacled book page.

Main Characters

Hermione Granger

During the war, Hermione trained abroad as a healer and became the Order’s healer and potions worker. SenLinYu has said she was also Snape’s apprentice. When the story opens, the Order has lost and she has been held in a dark, soundless solitary cell.

Part of her memory is sealed by magic. Legilimency can’t reach it, and neither can she. Voldemort believes she is hiding an Order secret, and that belief is the only reason she is alive. Because a magical pregnancy is expected to loosen her memories, she is sent as a surrogate to the High Reeve. Her manacles block all her magic, stop her touching weapons or harming herself or her master, and make her trackable.

Draco Malfoy, the High Reeve

In the present day, Draco is the High Reeve, Voldemort’s masked executioner and second-in-command. The regime needs a trusted, skilled Legilimens to keep searching Hermione’s mind during a pregnancy, and he is the one she is sent to. He is married to Astoria, and Hermione lives in his home, Malfoy Manor.

On Voldemort’s orders, Draco rapes Hermione to make her pregnant, and he is cold and detached. He and Voldemort search her mind again and again. Who Draco really is underneath that is the story’s central secret, and it is covered in the spoiler section below.

Recurring Characters in Manacled

Voldemort

Voldemort rules post-war wizarding Britain. His regime enslaves Muggle-borns and runs the repopulation program: pureblood birthrates have fallen to a critical low, marriages are mandated, and Muggle-born and half-blood captives become surrogates for couples who cannot have children, dressed in red. He searches Hermione’s mind himself, alongside Draco.

Astoria Malfoy

Draco’s wife. She is openly hostile to Hermione at the Manor, and that hostility turns violent as Part One goes on.

Lucius Malfoy

Draco’s father, and unstable. His larger role comes late in the story, so the details are in the spoiler section.

Dolores Umbridge

Umbridge now runs Voldemort’s prisons, and she is the one who drags Hermione out of solitary at the start of the story. Her role parallels Aunt Lydia’s in The Handmaid’s Tale; the pilot of Hulu’s series inspired Manacled.

Severus Snape

Hermione’s mentor; she was his apprentice. In the present, Voldemort reportedly asks Snape first to take Hermione, and he declines.

Healer Stroud

The regime healer who oversees the surrogacy. The surname carries over to Alchemised unchanged.

Graham Montague

A Death Eater, and one of the characters the fic tags by name. What he does is in the spoiler section.

Harry Potter and Ron Weasley

Both are dead before the present-day story begins, killed in the final battle at Hogwarts. You meet them in the flashbacks, as Hermione’s friends during the long war. Our Manacled timeline explained guide shows which chapters are flashbacks.

Narcissa Malfoy

Draco’s mother. She is dead before the story begins, and what happened to her matters more than it first seems.

If you are reading Alchemised instead, our Alchemised character names guide maps each name from the fic to the novel.

Manacled Character Spoilers: What Happens to Everyone

Spoiler warning: everything below reveals the major twists and the ending.

Manacled Draco: The Spy

Draco is the Order’s spy. During the war he offered to spy for the Order, and his price was a pardon and Hermione herself. She became his secret contact. They met in secret, he trained her to fight, and over time they fell in love, amid mutual mistrust and his growing possessiveness.

His motive was revenge. Voldemort tortured Narcissa, and Draco took the Dark Mark to protect her. After her death he waited before turning, so he would not draw suspicion. When his intelligence let the Order raid a prison, Voldemort punished him by carving dark runes into his back. Hermione healed him and secretly placed an artifact, the Heart of Isis, in the runes without telling him.

In the present, his cruelty is cover, kept up because Voldemort keeps searching Hermione’s mind. SenLinYu has said Draco secretly used contraception until Healer Stroud threatened to transfer Hermione to Lucius. They have also said he never tells Hermione he loves her because he fears repeating Lucius’s possessiveness toward Narcissa. In Part Three he plans to get her out, expecting to die. Instead he survives, without his Mark-bearing arm, and lives in hiding, presumed dead. Years later, a history book gives him a chapter of his own.

Manacled Hermione: The Secret She Buried

Hermione sealed her own memories. Near the end of the war, she blew up a lab to destroy records of Draco and was captured. Before the manacles went on, she used Occlumency to bury every memory of him, protecting his cover and locking those memories away from herself too. The Order secret Voldemort wants is Draco’s role as the spy.

Her memories return in Part Three, and Chapter 64 reveals that Ginny and her son James, Hermione’s godson, are alive and hidden by Draco. During the escape, she amputates Draco’s arm. In hiding in Japan she gives birth to their daughter, Aurore. The history book that gives Draco a chapter gives her only a photo caption. SenLinYu has said that, long after the story, Hermione dies first of the two, when her use of the Dark Arts catches up with her.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Manacled characters called in Alchemised?

In the novel, Hermione becomes Helena Marino, Draco becomes Kaine Ferron (still the High Reeve) and Harry becomes Luc Holdfast. The setting changes too: magic is replaced with alchemy, and Britain becomes the city-state of Paladia.

Is Manacled a Dramione fic?

Yes. Its relationship tag is Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy, with tags for a slow build and an eventual romance. It is also tagged Rape/Non-Con, and SenLinYu calls it a 'dystopian horror story', so expect a dark war story rather than a light romance.

Is Manacled canon-compliant?

Only up to a point. It follows canon through the end of Order of the Phoenix, then becomes an alternate universe in which Voldemort wins the war.
