Manacled Timeline Explained: Flashbacks, Parts and Chapters
This Manacled timeline guide contains spoilers, but they are flagged: the table and tips near the top are spoiler-light, and every section that gives away the plot says so in its heading. In short, Manacled is told in three blocks. Chapters 1–25 are set in the present day, Flashbacks 1–38 (chapters 26–63) go back to the war years, and Chapters 64–74 return to the present before three epilogues close the story.
SenLinYu planned it as three parts: present, past, present. The flashbacks are not scattered through the story. They arrive as one long, unbroken run of 38 chapters, and that is the main thing to know before you start.
The Manacled Timeline at a Glance
| Part | Chapter labels | Chapter numbers | When it is set | Posted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part One | Chapter 1 to Chapter 25 | 1–25 | Present day | April 27 to September 25, 2018 |
| Part Two | Flashback 1 to Flashback 38 | 26–63 | The war years | September 28, 2018 to April 26, 2019 |
| Part Three | Chapter 64 to Chapter 74 | 64–74 | Present day | May 3 to August 2, 2019 |
| Epilogues | Epilogue 1 to Epilogue 3 | 75–77 | After the main story | August 9, 15 and 19, 2019 |
A few things the table doesn’t show:
- Chapters 1 to 6 all went up on the same day, April 27, 2018.
- After that, updates came roughly once a week.
- The notable exception was a gap of more than a month between Flashback 29 (January 25, 2019) and Flashback 30 (March 1, 2019).
- Epilogue 3 went up on August 19, 2019 and completed the fic at 77 chapters.
How the Present and the Flashbacks Fit Together
The present-day story opens with Hermione Granger pulled out of solitary confinement with part of her memory sealed off. Nobody can reach those memories, including her, and Voldemort is convinced she is hiding an Order secret. Part One spends 25 chapters on that mystery.
Around Chapter 25, the walls in Hermione’s mind begin to crumble, and the next chapter is Flashback 1. From there the story stays in the past for all 38 flashbacks, covering the war years that led to her capture. Only then does it return to the present, at Chapter 64, and carry on to the end.
So the structure works like a question and an answer. Part One asks what Hermione has lost, Part Two shows it, and Part Three deals with what happens once she knows. The fic’s own tags include Mystery, Memory Loss and Flashbacks, which is a fair description of how it is built.
Why the Chapter Numbers Jump From 25 to 64
The chapter labels and the chapter numbers are two different systems. The flashbacks are labeled Flashback 1 to 38, but they fill positions 26 to 63 in the chapter list. When the present day resumes, its labels pick up the overall count, so the chapter after Flashback 38 is called Chapter 64. There is no chapter labeled 26.
Tips for Keeping the Manacled Timeline Straight
These tips are spoiler-light.
- Add 25 to a flashback number to get its chapter number. Flashback 1 is chapter 26, Flashback 10 is chapter 35, and Flashback 38 is chapter 63. This helps when a discussion cites a chapter number and you only remember the flashback.
- Check the label, not just the number. “Chapter” means the present day, “Flashback” means the war years, and “Epilogue” means after the main story.
- Use Harry as a marker. Harry Potter is dead before the present-day story begins, so any scene with him alive in it is a flashback.
- Watch for magic. In the present, Hermione wears manacles that block all her magic. If she is casting spells, you are almost certainly in the past.
- Keep a two-column note. List each question the present day raises in one column, and tick it off in the other when a flashback answers it. Over 38 flashbacks in a row, it is easy to forget what you were waiting to learn.
- Pause at the part breaks. Chapter 25 and Flashback 38 (chapter 63) are natural stopping points. Ending a reading session at a part break makes the switch easier to follow. Our how long is Manacled guide has more on pacing a read this size.
- Keep a cast list nearby. The flashbacks bring Harry and Ron back into the story, along with the wartime Order. Our Manacled characters guide stays spoiler-light at the top.
What Each Part Covers (Spoilers)
Spoiler warning: this section and the next give away the major twists.
Part One: Chapters 1–25
Umbridge, who now runs Voldemort’s prisons, drags Hermione out of solitary. Her sealed memories keep her alive, because Voldemort believes she is hiding an Order secret. Under the regime’s repopulation program, she is sent as a surrogate to the High Reeve, Draco Malfoy, at Malfoy Manor. There she is raped on Voldemort’s orders, has her mind searched again and again, and faces Astoria’s hostility. By the end of the part she is pregnant and her mental walls are starting to give.
Part Two: Flashbacks 1–38 (Chapters 26–63)
The war years. Hermione, the Order’s healer, argues for using the Dark Arts and grows apart from Harry and Ron. Draco offers to spy for the Order, naming a pardon and Hermione as his price, and she becomes his secret contact. The part follows their slow-burn relationship through the Horcrux hunt and the final battle at Hogwarts, where Harry and Ron die. It ends with Hermione blowing up a lab, being captured, and using Occlumency to bury every memory of Draco. That buried secret, that Draco is the spy, is what Part One was circling.
Part Three: Chapters 64–74
Back in the present, with her memories restored. Chapter 64 reveals that Ginny and her son James are alive, hidden by Draco. Lucius learns the truth and kills Astoria, and Hermione and Draco escape, presumed dead, to an unplottable island in Japan.
Epilogues 1–3: Chapters 75–77
Their daughter Aurore is born, Ginny kills Voldemort about four years after the escape, and the final chapter jumps forward to a history book in which Hermione appears as a single caption. For the full detail, see our Manacled summary, and for the last chapter, Manacled ending explained.
Manacled in Chronological Order (Spoilers)
Here are the main events in the order they happen in the story’s world, rather than the order they are told:
- Canon, up to a point. Events follow the Harry Potter books through the end of Order of the Phoenix, then the story goes its own way.
- The long war. The war drags on for years. Hermione trains abroad as a healer, becomes the Order’s healer and potions worker, and grows apart from Harry and Ron by arguing for the Dark Arts.
- Draco turns. Voldemort has tortured Narcissa, and Draco took the Dark Mark to protect her. After her death he waits, then offers to spy for the Order. Hermione becomes his secret contact, and the two slowly fall in love. (Part Two)
- The end of the war. Voldemort kills Harry, who is a Horcrux, and Ron dies in the final battle at Hogwarts. Draco retrieves Ginny from a lab; Hermione blows up the lab, is captured and buries her memories of Draco. (End of Part Two)
- Captivity. Hermione is held in solitary confinement for a long stretch. Part One opens as it ends.
- The present. Umbridge pulls her out, and she is sent to the High Reeve. (Part One)
- The escape. Her memories return, the truth comes out, and she and Draco flee to Japan. (Part Three)
- The aftermath. Aurore is born, and about four years after the escape Ginny kills Voldemort. War trials follow. (Epilogues)
- Years later. A grown Aurore finds her mother’s caption in a history book. (Final chapter)
Read this list once and you’ll see why the told order matters: steps 3 and 4 are exactly what Part One keeps from you.
Does Alchemised Follow the Same Timeline?
Largely, yes. Alchemised, SenLinYu’s published reworking, keeps the same three-part structure (present, long flashback, present) and the same core arc. It adds a prologue at the front and closes with an epilogue set in 1808. Its present day also opens differently: Helena Marino, the novel’s Hermione, wakes after 14 months in a stasis tank rather than being pulled from a solitary cell.
If you are choosing between the two, our Manacled book page has the background on both versions.
One last tip for Alchemised readers: the same tricks work. Note the chapter where the long flashback begins and the one where it ends, and treat everything between them as its own book.
Frequently asked questions
How long is Manacled?
The finished fic runs to 370,515 words. At a reading speed of 250 words a minute, that is about 25 hours of reading.
Should I read Manacled in chronological order?
Not on a first read. The present-day chapters are built around a secret that the flashbacks reveal, so reading the war years first gives away the central mystery. Chronological order works better on a reread.
Where can I read Manacled now?
There is no authorized place to read it. Manacled was removed from AO3 on January 1, 2025. The story lives on, reworked, in the novel Alchemised, which is sold in hardcover, ebook and audiobook.
