LPC Supervised Hours: What Counts and How to Track Them
LPC supervised hours are the post-master’s counseling hours you complete under an approved supervisor between graduating and full licensure. Counseling boards commonly ask for somewhere in the range of 2,000 to 4,000 hours over at least two years, with a minimum share in direct client contact and a required amount of supervision, though the figures and the license title differ state by state.
Because the same license is called LPC in some states, LPCC or LMHC in others, requirements you read about online often belong to a different board than yours. Confirm every number with your own licensing board before you plan around it.
Register First, Then Start Counting
The single most expensive mistake in counseling licensure is working for months before your supervision is registered.
Many boards count hours only from the date you are approved as an associate, intern, resident or provisional licensee, and only under a supervision plan they have on file. Hours worked before that date, under the same supervisor, doing the same work, may simply not count.
Do this before your first client:
- Check what your board calls the pre-licensed status and download the application.
- Confirm your supervisor’s eligibility in writing: license type, years licensed, any required supervisor training or board approval.
- Submit the supervision plan or agreement if your board requires one.
- Note the approval date at the top of your log. That is your countable start date.
- Ask what happens to any hours worked before approval. Some boards allow a limited retroactive window; most do not.
Keep the approval letter with your log. It is the document that anchors your entire record.
How the Hour Requirement Is Usually Structured
Counseling boards typically layer four things:
- A total of supervised post-master’s experience hours.
- A minimum elapsed period, commonly at least two years.
- A direct client contact minimum inside the total.
- A supervision requirement, often stated as a ratio such as one hour of supervision for every set number of client contact hours, or as a weekly or biweekly minimum, with limits on how much can be group supervision.
The ratio form catches people out. If your board wants an hour of supervision per fixed block of direct hours, a heavy month of sessions creates a supervision obligation, not just a bigger direct total. Track the ratio, not only the totals.
What Counts as Direct Contact
Direct client contact for counseling licensure generally means real-time clinical work with a client, couple, family or group. Sessions, intakes and groups you facilitate typically count. Progress notes, case consultation, collateral calls, chart review and required training are usually indirect.
Boards vary on phone sessions, telehealth limits, caps on group hours, and whether psychoeducation classes qualify. Our guide to direct vs indirect clinical hours sorts the usual gray areas, and it is worth settling yours in writing with your supervisor early, because these categories are the ones that determine whether you finish on schedule.
A Realistic Week Across Two Sites
Many counseling associates work an agency job and see a few clients at a group practice. Here is a week with both.
| Day | Site | Direct | Indirect | Supervision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Agency | 4.0 | 3.0 | 0 |
| Tuesday | Agency | 4.5 | 1.5 | 1.0 individual |
| Wednesday | Agency | 5.0 | 2.5 | 0 |
| Thursday | Agency | 3.0 | 3.0 | 1.5 group |
| Friday | Group practice | 4.0 | 1.0 | 0 |
| Saturday | Group practice | 3.0 | 0.5 | 1.0 individual |
| Week | 23.5 | 11.5 | 3.5 |
Two things make this week work. Each site has its own approved supervisor, and the log records which site each entry belongs to, so each supervisor signs only for hours they actually oversaw. A single blended total that one supervisor attests to would be a problem.
Tuesday in detail: two morning individual sessions, a 90-minute diagnostic interview, an hour of individual supervision at 1 p.m., an afternoon group, an hour of notes and a half hour of case management. That is 4.5 direct, 1 supervision, 1.5 indirect.
Tracking Two Supervisors Without Confusion
Add a site column and a supervisor column to your log and fill them on every row. Then you can produce, on demand:
- Total hours by supervisor, for each verification form
- Direct hours by site, if your board asks about setting
- Supervision hours by supervisor and format
- A month-by-month summary each supervisor can sign separately
This is where a spreadsheet earns its keep, because filtering by supervisor is instant and the totals recalculate themselves. Our clinical hours tracker spreadsheet for Google Sheets lets you define your own categories and targets in a setup tab, which is what makes a two-site, two-supervisor arrangement manageable rather than a monthly reconciliation project.
Sign-Off Cadence
Get a signed summary from each supervisor every month. Not every quarter, and certainly not at the end.
Counseling associates change jobs more often than almost any other pre-licensed group, and supervisors move on too. A supervisor who has left the state, retired or simply stopped answering email cannot sign a form for hours they oversaw eighteen months ago. A stack of monthly summaries, each signed at the time, protects you from that entirely. How to get clinical hours signed off covers the practical wording and what to do when someone leaves unexpectedly.
Do Practicum and Internship Hours Count?
Usually not toward the post-master’s total, though there are exceptions and a few states allow a limited amount of graduate-level experience to apply. Practicum and internship hours generally satisfy your degree program’s requirements and, in some states, part of the coursework verification on your license application.
Keep the documentation regardless. Your program’s final hour tallies are often requested during licensure, and they are far easier to obtain while you are still enrolled. Our guide to practicum vs internship hours in counseling explains how programs usually distinguish the two.
Set Targets You Can Check Weekly
Take your board’s direct minimum, divide by the number of working weeks you realistically have, and treat the result as a weekly goal. Then check it every Friday.
An associate who needs around 12 direct hours a week and is averaging 10 will be roughly 100 hours short after a year, which is months of extra work. Caught in week eight, it is a scheduling conversation. Caught in month twenty, it is a delay. How to set clinical hour targets walks through building targets by category, and how to track clinical hours for licensure covers the weekly routine that keeps the numbers honest.
Watch for These
- Supervision gaps. In many states, weeks without qualifying supervision may not count.
- Exceeding a weekly cap. Some boards limit claimable hours per week regardless of what you worked.
- Changing supervisors without notifying the board. Many states require an updated plan.
- Client names in your log. Use identifiers.
- Relying on agency records. Keep your own copy in your own account.
Start with one concrete step: write your board-approved start date at the top of your log today, and confirm with your supervisor in an email that everything before it is excluded. Knowing exactly where your countable period begins is worth more than any estimate of where it will end.
Frequently asked questions
How many supervised hours does an LPC need?
It depends on the state. Many counseling boards ask for roughly 2,000 to 4,000 hours of post-master's supervised experience over at least two years, with a direct client contact minimum inside that total. Confirm your state's numbers with your board.
What is the difference between LPC, LPCC and LMHC?
They are different state names for broadly similar counseling licenses. The title, the hour requirements and the supervision rules all vary, so use your own state's terminology when you read requirements.
Do I need to be an associate or provisional licensee before hours count?
In many states, yes. Boards often count only hours accrued after you register as an associate, intern or provisional licensee, which means registering late can cost you months of work.
Can I count hours from two different jobs?
Usually, if each site has an approved supervisor and the supervision requirement is met at each. Track the sites separately so each supervisor can attest only to the hours they actually oversaw.
